Barga: Discover Tuscany's best kept secret

#tuscany, #Italy, #mountains, #pretty

I've said before that I love Italy, and Tuscany is so so beautiful! I was lucky enough to spend two amazing weeks in Barga with a day in Florence, too.

Italy is a country full of  culture, beautiful scenery and amazing food so in my opinion it can do no wrong. I've been to Italy four times now and I could keep going back. Most recently I went to attend a wedding show in Rome for work, and a few years ago I took this trip to Tuscany.

How to get there: We were incredibly lucky with flight deals. For once I actually booked something a loooong time in advance and we managed to bag return flights to Pisa from Bristol for just £30 with Easy Jet. From Pisa it was a bit of a mission to get to Barga though. We had to wait four hours for a train and then had to take a taxi from the station to our apartment.

Where to stay: We chose rent an apartment for two weeks from as this gave us much more flexibility, and being on a budget, it meant we could occasionally cook out own meals to save the pennies. We were also able to talk directly with the owner and he gave us a great deal on our stay. The location was perfect as well – right by the main square and within easy reach of everything in the town.

What to see and do: Barga is quite a sleepy town but it's a great location for a relaxed escape. The town itself is very pretty but you can see it all relatively quickly. We weren't after a manic holiday so this suited us fine. We spent most of the days at the town's outdoor pool and generally sitting about soaking up the sun and enjoying the amazing Italian scenery. We also took one day to visit Florence. As we only had a day here we visited the main tourist spot – the historic centre, taking in the impressive Cathedral as well as Ponte Vecchio.
